God could not make a creature more holy than Mary
St. Leonard of Port Maurice concludes that in making Mary his mother, he gave her the best of everything.
God could create an infinity of suns,
one more brilliant than the other; an infinity of worlds,
one more marvelous than the other; an infinity of angels,
one more holy than the other.
But a creature more holy, more ravishing,
more gracious than his mother he could not make.
For in making her his mother, he gave her at once, so to say, all that he could give
of beauty and goodness and holiness and sanctity
in the treasury of his omnipotence.
—St. Leonard of Port Maurice
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
Why would Mary’s status as the Mother of God imply perfections of beauty, goodness, holiness, and sanctity in her creation? Would God create his own mother to be anything less?
CLOSING PRAYER
From a prayer of St. Germanus: Your name is Our Lady. You alone are Mother of God and raised high over all the earth.
