The Seraphim surround Christ in the flesh
Jesus was born in humble circumstances, but the eye of faith, says St. Methodius of Olympus, can see the tiny child surrounded by the glorious Seraphim even in the manger.
Look! As a throne, lifted up on high by the glory of God who made it, the virgin mother is made ready, clearly for the King, the Lord of hosts.
Think of the Lord coming to you now in sinful flesh! On this virginal throne, I say, worship him, who now comes to you in this new and praiseworthy way.
Look around you with the eye of faith, and you will find the royal and priestly company of the Seraphim around him, as their duty demands. As his bodyguard, they always attend the King wherever he is.
Thus in this place we say not only that they hymn with their praises the divine substance of the divine unity, but also the glory, to be worshiped by all, of the sacred Trinity—which now has come to earth, because God has appeared in the flesh. “The whole earth is full of his glory,” they say. For we believe that, along with the Son, who was made man for our sake, according to his will, the Father was also present, who is inseparable from him in his divine nature, and also the Spirit, who is of one and the same being. –St. Methodius of Olympus, Oration on Simeon and Anna, 2
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
When I go to Mass, how will I see my parish church differently if I remember that Christ on our altar is surrounded by the glorious Seraphim?
CLOSING PRAYER
Holy Seraphim, who dwell in the eternal home of love, light in my heart that holy fire that consumes you.
