All this week, the writers of Christ and Pop Culture unveil their 25 most loved things of 2013.

#19. Feminism

Why did “feminism” make our list in 2013 when it’s been around for well over a century? This year we’ve been encouraged by discussions by and about women within the church. From Wendy Alsup’s call for a New Wave of Complementarianism to Sarah Bessey’s plea for Christians to recognize the way that Jesus loves women in her book Jesus Feminist; from Malala Yousafzai’s continued activism after assassination attempts last year to the Q Focus on Women and Calling in New York, women are rising to discover their full, God-given potential.

As I wrote for Christ and Pop Culture back in February, when Christians offer unqualified criticisms of feminism, or frame feminism as an enemy to faith and family, what we unintentionally communicate to many people is that we do not support the full humanity of women. The glory of God and the gospel are reflected best when men and women work together as equal partners in kingdom endeavors. And that’s why we’re glad that this year, Christians started talking more about the fact that women do, after all, hold up “half the sky”.
