Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, every little glitch and hiccup in your life is magnified? When my emotions are frayed, stress seems to build with every setback, real or perceived. Typically this mentality of stress can be traced back to something in particular happening in my current life stage, whether it be a looming work deadline or an unsettling situation or whatever. But recent research findings suggest that the origins of our stress go back even... Read more
Each week in The Moviegoer, Nick Olson examines new and upcoming films. This week, Image released a Top 25 Films About Marriage list as voted on by the Arts and Faith community. You can read an excellent introduction to the list written by my Filmwell colleague, Michael Leary. I am privileged to have had the opportunity to contribute a blurb to the list for the #19 selection, Tuesday, After Christmas–a film that captures the consequences of adultery in a way that I’ve... Note: This post contains spoilers for Season 3 of Downton Abbey. Like much of Britain and America, we here at Christ and Pop Culture love us some Downton Abbey, the Julian Fellowes television series that traces the lives of a family of English nobles and their servants over the course of the early twentieth century. One of the most recent exchanges on the series came in dueling articles published at The Atlantic. On February 6, Meghan Lewit contended that the... Read more
The President’s speech last night might well have been constructed from the cutting room floor where they put together all the rest of his speeches. It was suitably well delivered, though nowhere near the “jaw dropping” oratory we’re supposed to believe he produces. It undulated between plans-to-make-plans and superficial policy proposals, casting the American moment in starkly statist terms while needling strawmen that he then labeled as his GOP rivals. Health care for the elderly should be a bipartisan goal!... Read more
Each week in God and Country Music, Nick Rynerson gives country music a chance and examines the world of Americana, folk, alt-country, and popular country music. Americana/Folk has always been a fluid, hard-to-define genre. It’s almost best defined as the-genre-for-music-with-guitars-that-can’t-fit-nicely-into-any-other-genre. And maybe that’s the way it should be for a genre significantly less touched by commercialism than other headline-Grammy-nomination-genres. Recent redefinitions of Grammy award categories hasn’t helped us know the difference between Americana and Folk. For example, “Best Americana Album” is... Read more
Whether we choose to celebrate Lent, Valentine’s Day, or both, it is our love that makes us who we are. Read more
Oh, Valentine’s day. Riddled with expectations, horrible satin bows, and lots and lots of chocolate (58 million pounds sold each Valentine’s week in the U.S. alone). But there is another, somewhat hidden story lurking underneath. Of the chocolate that we purchase for those near and dear to us this week, there is almost certainly a child slave laborer involved in producing it. I’m sorry to stomp on your “holiday”, but it still needs to be said: stories on abuse... Read more
Remember that dystopian novel we read in high school? The one where humans were barred from interacting with the natural world, and everyone ate the same factory-produced synthetic foodstuffs? Where any human who questioned the status quo was watched by the government, fined, or harassed? Oh wait – I’m getting 1984 and Brave New World mixed up with last week’s New York Times. Apparently in Orlando “the mayor claims to be striving to make his city green while his city harasses... Read more
Every week, various Christ and Pop Culture writers delve deeper into recent articles and address some of the bigger issues in popular culture. Click Here to Listen! The podcast is back for the second week in a row! Christ and Pop Culture editors Drew Dixon and Brad Williams do one better than last week’s hosts by discussing the ACTUAL Superbowl. They talk about how awkward watching the game can be, it’s most interesting and disturbing commercials and the Evangelical obsession... Read more
