Blogging Aquinas

I’ve been finding myself wanting to write more about philosophy recently, partially because of my extended discussion with Alex Symczak, partially because it’s interesting, and partially because I want to spend more time with my patron, St. Thomas Aquinas, which means spending more time with his writings, which means taking time to reflect, which means writing about it because that’s how I reflect.

This would include covering at least one of Thomas’ proofs of the existence of God, along with just what that means and doesn’t mean; it would also include discussion of a number of principles of Aristotelian philosophy, because that’s required to understand Thomas. And all of this could in principle go on indefinitely.

I’ve got a number of posts in mind to get started with; but ultimately, I’m going to need to begin to proceed somewhat systematically. “Systematically” means, in this case, that I’m following some pre-determined outline so that I know what to reflect on next. That pretty much means picking some work of St. Thomas, and working my way through it, trying to understand what he’s saying and what he’s assuming.

Does this appeal to any of you? Anyone have a particular work they’d like me to start with? Otherwise, I’ll probably try to work through the Compendium Theologiae, which is constructed in nice, bite-sized chunks. (The CT has the advantage that I got a fair distance into it on another blog some years back, and learned quite a lot. I wouldn’t be recycling the old posts, but I’d certainly be looking at them.)
