Odds and Ends

I’ve been doing some work beyond my weekly posts here at CULTIVARE and so I thought I’d share them with you:

Over at ThinkChristian I used the occasion of a new book on Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, The Last Supper, to reflect on the continued importance of this painting.

At Good Letters, the blog of IMAGE Journal (hosted by Patheos), I’m in the midst of a four-part series called, “The Poetics of Painting,” which explores the nuts and bolts of making and looking at a painting. My most recent post uses Edward Hopper’s Room in New York to delve more deeply into what actually happens when we look at some canvas with colored dirt smeared on it. I’m preparing my final installment, on tradition, this week.

And finally, I’ll shun the online world altogether and deliver a public lecture in Charlottesville, Virginia next week, entitled “The Tragedy of Abstract Expressionism,” in which I offer a radical re-interpretation of the more influential yet misunderstood creative moments in twentieth century cultural history.
