By tolerance and diversity, we must mean something else

Anthony Arnett wrote a piece that is making the rounds.  It’s a fair piece and worth the read.  The hammer falls heavier on the GOP side of the divide than the Democrats.  Nonetheless, he points out a few areas where the Democrats fall short.  In one case, he says this:

The Democrats support basic economic fairness and stand against racism, but they are most animated by the right of each individual to choose their own conception of the good. They are more interested in tolerance and diversity than in true solidarity.

And yet, as soon as I read about this Democratic shortcoming, I see a breaking story.   We’re told rather cheerfully by the Huffingon Post that ChristianMingle.com will have to allow LGBT identifying individuals to post and meet.

Now there are a billion sites that are open to the self-identifying LGBT community.  Heck, there are some that  cater exclusively to that segment of the population and no other.  Which apparently is OK.  Once again, however, we have a  case where a site that adheres to a religious belief that is out of sync with modern progressive values is told to conform.  To change.

That’s all fine and dandy, and you can justify it anyway you want, but you can’t call it tolerant or diverse.  That’s imposing values on someone else and demanding that they convert to your moral framework.  Which is what much of the support for the non-heterosexual normative movement is about.  Not equality.  Certainly not tolerance or diversity.  It’s about imposing values.

Time and again, members of the Democratic party have given a thumbs up to such actions.  So condemn the Democratic party all you want.  Give credit where it is due.  But the Democratic party is no more about diversity and tolerance than is the inappropriately labeled movement known as liberalism which it overwhelmingly represents.
