They’re here

Scary ghost stories and tales from the glories indeed.  It looks like some strange occurrences in Scotland have prompted authorities to turn to the Catholic Church.  This is the land of Glamis Castle after all.  Glamis hath murdered sleep, and apparently spread its influence around to baffle police in other parts of Scotland.  I dunno.  As a former agnostic and skeptic, accepting a universe of the supernatural was a hard sell.  I still tend to be somewhat skeptical, even with stories of miracles attributed to saints, my first reaction is, “Yeah, but maybe there’s a logical explanation.”  Which still makes me chuckle.  After all, if I concede a reality in which God exists, what could be more logical than a bona fide miracle?

Still, Bultmann had a point.  It’s that secular background in a fiercely secularized age surrounded by no clear sign of anything but steel and concrete and digital technology that makes me want more than just words and confused policemen.  In my whole life, I’ve had two experiences that are tough to explain, and one that boils down to faith or skepticism.  All others – and I’ve had many that some might run and declare a supernatural or miraculous occurrence – I boil down to simple explanations that are miraculous only in the sense that this is God’s creation and, in that way, everything is miraculous if you think about it.

With that said, it looks like Sick Pilgrim is reaching out for some good old ghost stories to celebrate the upcoming time of year when our fancies lightly turn to thoughts of ghouls and ghosts and goblin hosts.  I might submit one.  Don’t know.  It is nearing that time of the year I love so much.  Just thinking of it gets the pistons popping and a sudden yearning for apple cider next to a bonfire in a pumpkin patch.  So we’ll see.  For now, just be glad you’re not in Scotland.  Because one thing I do know is that I’ve never wanted to see a ghost.  If there are such things, I would prefer they stay rattling their chains in some other location than one I happen to be visiting.
