Why can’t Americans just get along?

Over at Thomas’s Discussions the question is asked: Where is the civility? Not that anyone should be under the illusion that politicians used to get along.  Tip O’Neil dedicated himself to stopping Reagan at every possible point along the policy way.  The difference was, there was a legitimate respect and appreciation beyond the rancor, which is sadly missing today. I blame the media in some ways, but even then, I feel it reflects attitudes far too common across the American landscape.
