By Ross Douthat.  Probably the fairest appraisal I’ve read.   It’s impossible to guess how future generations will rate Obama.   That will be based on the values of those doing the rating.  It was certainly a drop from the predictions, that’s for sure.  After all, no president in my lifetime came into the White House with such lofty expectations.  Anything short of ending death and aligning the planets would have fallen short. Still, not all was bad (sorry for... Read more

Courtesy of former president George H.W. Bush.   That’s how we move past divisions.  Assuming, of course, we want to move past divisions. Read more

Demonstrated.    I’ve often said that for being pro-choice, most seem to prefer one choice over another one.  And again, we see an example of modern tolerance.  As long as you accept our values, we’re completely tolerant of everyone who thinks the way we demand they think. After 2016, I’m not sure how many are still buying it. Read more

As well as the embarrassing and evil reactions to his election, won’t cause me to forget why I didn’t vote for Trump. At the end of the day, Trump was in single person form what too much of the progressive movement has been for the past 35 years.  I didn’t like it when folks on the Left did it, I don’t like it when Trump does it. For those believers who justify their progressive alliances by pointing to the well documented... Read more

Thousands line the streets to see Steven McDonald one last time. Det. McDonald was a police officer who was paralyzed in the line of duty.  He later forgave the shooter who changed his life forever. That’s what being a Christian is all about Charlie Brown.  Forgiveness.  There’s not much of that nowadays, and some discourse seems based on purposefully dismissing the idea that we are called to forgive those who have done us wrong. Det. McDonald knew better.  One of the best... Read more

On my way into the Catholic Church, I stopped by the Episcopal church.  That lasted about a day.  It didn’t take me long to see that, despite Bishop Robinson’s lofty prediction, the Episcopals were on a downward spiral. Oddly enough, the priest at my wife’s Orthodox church was once Episcopalian.  Which is why he’s now Orthodox.  Fr. Longenecker mentions a story that helps explain.  Reading the Koran in a Christian service, especially from texts that repudiate central Christian doctrine, makes... Read more

History isn’t easy.  At its best, it depends on how you read the tea leaves.  At its worst, you don’t give a flip about the tea leaves. Today, we tend to begin with what we know – that is, we’re right – and work backwards.   And that’s easy to do. That’s because history is based on accounts from the past, with little to no corroborating evidence except other accounts that either agree or disagree.  That leaves us with plenty... Read more

And not president elect Clinton?  This leaps to mind: Because of the extraordinary courage of our men and women in uniform, and the intelligence officers, law enforcement, and diplomats who support them, no foreign terrorist organization has successfully planned and executed an attack on our homeland these past eight years; and although Boston and Orlando remind us of how dangerous radicalization can be, our law enforcement agencies are more effective and vigilant than ever. In the Emperor’s New Clothes, just... Read more

Once again I’m seeing outrage pop up about this.  Apparently an MTV writer told Jeff Sessions to take his Asian grandchild back to Toys R Us.  The gist being he was only using the baby as a prop to prove he’s not a racist. Nothing unusual there.  I’ve read many pieces over the years insisting that no matter what a person does, no matter how many minorities they are friends with, how many they help, how open and loving they... Read more
