December is  busy for me.  Right now, I’m trying to keep up with a Patheos boot camp and am having a hard time doing so.  Birthdays, family anniversaries, the holidays, and watching Penn State win the Big 10 Championship while learning that Luke Fickell will be leaving for Cincinnati make for a busy week. Still, this weekend is reserved for celebrating the birthday of the world’s cutest wife.  After all she did last week for my big 50, it’s the... Read more

I’m Spartacus! Kirk Douglas turns 100 today!  He has had an illustrious career, and is one of those actors who can make almost any part good.  Despite his various roles, he’ll always be Spartacus to me.  Though he wanted to make Spartacus a testimony to the establishment of the State of Israel, Dalton Trumbo got his way and made it into a not too thinly veiled dig at the Untied States and a celebration of Communism. Still, it’s a great movie all around.... Read more

We’re seeing a wave of condemnation aimed at Fake News.  Fair enough.  Fake news is certainly a problem.  But could we define Fake News before we rush in?  I get that it’s a problem.  It always has been.  See Richard Jewell for a classic example.  But right now, we’re plowing in with ‘it must stop!’ without really defining what we mean. And if I’m any judge of horse flesh, I can guess that it won’t be long before “Fake News” becomes any... Read more

Because I don’t have to worry about being charged by the government for saying things that the government does not like.  A nice reminder that loose on sex and drugs and freedom aren’t always the same thing. For my part, I don’t care for what he said, or the reactions he elicited.  But as one who has heard similar chants here at home, aimed at everyone from Muslim immigrants to white Christians, I have to say I’m still glad folks... Read more

The first question I have is, could someone please tell me what’s wrong with the little girl doll on the Island of Misfit Toys? 😉 Read more

John Glenn, astronaut, senator, hero and all around great guy, has passed.  I never knew a world without John Glenn figuring prominently in school lessons or local news stories.  Being an Ohio boy, we were justly proud of him on so many different levels.  He served well as a senator, pushed the frontiers of space and science, was one of the few non OSU band members to dot the ‘i’, and has always been the kind of person I could... Read more

Here.  The hilarious part is that the Washington Post actually published this as some deep, profound piece of journalism.  This after we spent yesterday remembering thousands of men who died for the right for us to be this silly.  For their sake, I’ll raise a cup and say well done WP.  Silly?  Yes.  But I’ll take the freedom to be silly, even when it’s supposed to be serious. Read more

I didn’t vote for Trump, but if he does evil, I’ll oppose him.  Heck, even if he stands for things I think are bad, but could be argued as not being evil, I’ll oppose him.  But first, unless it’s something horrific, I’ll wait for him to become president.  Whether he knows it or not, he’s not president yet, so I’m still watching the one who gets his mail at the White House. Then again, I would have done the same... Read more

Out of 320 million people, what did you expect?  There will always be some people who judge and condemn others based solely on their gender, or religion, or skin color.  That happens.  So you don’t have to twist my arm to convince me there could be Americans who are bigoted toward Muslims or people from predominately Islamic religions. With that said, I’d think the BBC would hold off on this until there was actually some evidence.  Evidence, that is, beyond... Read more

That all hell was unleashed on a sunny, Sunday morning on Oahu, Hawaii.  By the end of the day, thousands of American servicemen would be dead, as would some civilians.   American plunged headfirst into the war with a resolve never to be repeated.  In the days after 9/11, some thought we might see that unity and resolve again.  But by then, the rot had set in, and the divisions were too deep. On one side you had those who believed... Read more
