I do, I do, I do, I do, I “do” believe in ghosts.  Believe it or not.  Even as a person of faith, I maintain a certain level of skepticism.  Call it a weakness, or the result of growing up in a secularized, technologically advanced society.  But when I hear tales of miracles or the supernatural, I have a little bit of Missouri in me.  That was certainly true in the early days of my faith.  I accepted the basics... Read more

Chris Wallace.  Just about everyone on both sides of the aisle agree, Mr. Wallace was about the best we’ve seen in this year’s deplorable side shows that have been the presidential debates.  Not surprising.  Not all FOX News is Sean Hannity.   Just like not all CNN is Chris Cuomo.   Or any network simply one way or another based on this or that person.  There’s a reason I watch MSNBC, and CNN, and FOX, and CBS, and NBC, and... Read more

Few periods in history have been boiled down to a bumper sticker level of knowledge than the Crusades.  It’s one of those periods that everyone has heard of, but knows little about.   When I teach adults and talk about this period in the larger context of Islamic invasions, I’m taken by how few have heard that Islam ever tried to invade Europe.  Or anywhere else for that matter.   They usually have some vague ‘Didn’t Islam convert by the... Read more

Speaking of Halloween movies, some years ago Simcha Fisher wrote a piece about movies she and her family watched around Halloween.  Inspired by that, I presented my own humble offering.  We’ve added to the list since then, most recently the Academy Award winning 1932 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, starring Frederic March.   My oldest wanted that for his birthday, and with the miracle of digital downloads, we were able to deliver and enjoy it last night to cap... Read more

Today marked the end of the siege of Yorktown and the surrender of Cornwallis to Washington.  It isn’t as if things just fell together and our country rose the next day, ready to enslave and slaughter as good Americans should.  The Treaty of Paris wouldn’t be signed for two more years.   But with the defeat of Cornwallis, the futility of England’s continued resistance against the Colonial bid for independence became clear.  The fighting ended and the Colonists could start... Read more

As demonstrated in this little editorial piece about Christian propaganda in horror films, just in time for Halloween.  No, it’s not some fundamentalist Christian reviling horror films as being of the devil.  It’s by an obviously not-Christian writer reviling horror films for daring to show Christianity in a positive light.  Just imagine if someone said the same thing about movies that show atheism or Islam or homosexuality or women’s rights in the same way.  I have a gut feeling the... Read more

It looks like the courts have seen something in Iowa’s anti-discrimination laws could jeopardize religious liberty.  I’m no lawyer, so I don’t comment much on such stories.  Nonetheless, given the trends in recent years, I can see where churches would be worried.  Especially if the wording in the law is as they suggest.  Given the difficulty associated with reclaiming lost freedoms, I’d rather err on the side of caution. Read more

Is looked at here.   Oh, I mean here.   Because apparently talk of rigged and corrupt elections has been slightly exaggerated.  One thing about this election, I’ve learned a lot.  I’ve learned my company was wrong when it said exposing sensitive emails could lead to termination.  Apparently while it isn’t a good thing, it’s not that important.  Certainly nothing that should reflect on job performance.  I’ve learned that sexual morality and ethics actually matter.  That just because the press... Read more

We’ve got millions of them.  Our oldest is finally becoming an adult in the real world.  21 years that is.  I guess that makes me officially old.  Nonetheless, old geezer that I am, we’re setting time aside to indulge in several youthful activities through the day.  Since his birthday is late in October, we always think Halloween when we’re celebrating.   So with that, enjoy this, the best Halloween themed commercial in years, and I’ll be back later this week to... Read more

Michael Flynn echoes what I, and many others, have been saying.   The media is in full hysterics mode with the Trump revelations at this point.  It’s 24/7 round the clock coverage.  Which it was in the late 90s.   It’s just that, by the fourth phase of the Lewinsky scandal, the coverage centered on convincing us that if it had to do with sex, it was no big deal.  Even subtly slipping the topic of sexual assault into the... Read more
