This year we waited until October, though as the piece says, in years past we would move things up a bit.   We are a family of traditions, and woe be to me if I suggest to the boys that we should change certain fundamentals.  Some things come and go, but Halloween Haunts will last well beyond my lifespan if my boys have anything to say about it. Read more

University of Toronto professor explains why he won’t bow down before the PC juggernaut of censorship for the common Left.  The modern progressive idea that there are 7 billion people in the world who better stop doing and saying anything that offends me is a train wreck waiting to happen.  Nice to see common sense trying to apply the brakes. Read more

So the news is abuzz about Bill Clinton calling the Affordable Care Act ‘the craziest thing in the world.’   Don’t for a minute think that Bill has gone overboard or off his rocker.   The next step will be towards a more socialized model than Obamacare.  Obamacare would be the first step.  But it isn’t as if they’ll look for some other, private sector based solution to remedy the flaws of the current system.   Those conservatives who are... Read more

Is looked at in this piece. After a week long implosion by Trump, it’s worth stepping back and reorganizing our thinking.  Most who support Trump are either those deplorables who see in Trump a validation for their unacceptable prejudices, or the larger group that begrudgingly supports Trump because they believe the alternative is far worse.  They admit to all of Trump’s foibles, they acknowledge there is no way to understand Trump’s incoherent ramblings about policy, they simply fear that four more years of... Read more

Is today.   Here is a piece I wrote early on.   He was my patron saint before I became Catholic, and as I said, he enjoyed popularity even among non-believers and fundamentalist Christians.  Not bad if you think about it.  Here is nice page spelling out the Feast and the life of this saint of saints. Read more

We’ve all heard about the Alt-Right.  This is some movement within conservatism where people seem content to live up to all of the negative stereotypes that have been said about conservatives over the years.   The idea, I suppose, is that not all conservatives are bigots, racists, homophobes, sexist, and on and on.  Some are, and those would be the Alt-Right.  As far as I remember, there was never such a distinction, but since there is now, I’ll take everyone’s word.... Read more

By reiterating Catholic teaching as well as the basic assumption most societies have embraced for the better part of history. I think that in some ways Pope Francis has drawn a thicker line in the sand between the progressive approach to human relations, especially sexuality, than many thought.  After all, before Pope Francis, the Left could say the Church and its leaders were all about hate, oppression, intimidation, and bigotry.  Because leaders, when pressed, took more traditional approaches to condemning... Read more

I was at the game yesterday when former Buckeyes coach Earle Bruce was allowed to dot the ‘i’ in the Ohio State Marching Band’s incomparable Script Ohio.  That’s an elite club, with only ten members in the history of the school.  Nice to see.  Mr. Bruce is one of those examples of bad timing.  A good, capable coach.  He was the last OSU football coach to win Coach of the Year.  No, he didn’t have stellar record.  Ohio State fans are a... Read more
