I think I detect a bias toward an ultimately materialistic explanation in Gideon Lichfield’s writing — he tends to call it “scientific” — but he provides a reasonably fair summation. And I’m inclined to think that, if he’s giving us the best the materialists can offer, they don’t have really have all that much.
