"Single," but not like today
“Single,” an 1846 engraved print showing a man sitting by the fire in his solitary apartment and lamenting his bachelorhood. His boots lie on the floor.  (Presumably he’s had to take them off himself.) A broken tobacco-pipe(?) is also on the floor. He holds another print in his hand, entitled “Married,” showing a man with his wife and three children. The artist’s signature at lower right identifies him as “Anderson Honeydew, New-York.” Attitudes have changed!
