We saw King Lear at UCLA’s Royce Hall in 2007, with Sir Ian McKellen in the title role.  But that seems an awfully long time ago, and, although I can’t find a list of previous Utah Shakespeare Festival seasons, I think we’ve seen it here in Cedar City since then.  (Our first Festival Lear, I believe, was the late Harold Gould.)  I couldn’t say how many times we’ve seen it in total.

As I sat there tonight, seeing it yet again (in a very fine performance headed by Tony Amendola), one my reactions was sheer awe.  It is, surely, one of the greatest pieces of theater, one of the greatest pieces of literature altogether, that has ever been written.

It’s also my wife’s favorite Shakespeare play, and has been for as long as I’ve known her.  I can certainly understand why.

And we ran into more friends tonight.  A fun place!
