“Harry Reid Shocked to Learn He’s Mormon”

I’ve defended Senator Harry Reid on this blog — more than once — against attacks on his faith, calls for his excommunication, and so forth.  I don’t believe that the Church should be divided by political differences; in fact, I regard such divisions as the work of the devil.  (And I’m deeply serious about that.)

However, the fact remains that I disagree very, very strongly with Brother Reid on a number of important political issues, and that I’ve been deeply disappointed at times not only by his partisanship (I had hoped that he would be an improvement on his predecessor as Senate Democratic leader, Tom Daschle, but he hasn’t been) but by the inappropriately personal and angry character of some of the things he’s said.  My belief that we shouldn’t demonize others, and particularly fellow Latter-day Saints, over political disagreements — the same belief that has impelled me to defend Brother Reid — has obliged me, on several occasions, to condemn Senator Reid.
