I appreciate Jabra Ghneim’s bringing this to my notice:

Just one quibble about an article and an event of which I otherwise heartily approve:

Rafiza Chowdhury, a hijab-wearing member of the Islamic Center of Irving, is quoted in the piece as acknowledging that many of her non-Muslim neighbors are “scared,” that they’re “frightened of the sinister image of the ‘Muslim next door’ being propagated in the media.”

But, alas, the fear doesn’t come only because of a media image.  There are Muslims — a small minority, yes, I understand, but still more than enough — who have been working diligently for many years to terrify those around them.  And they’re succeeding.  The coldly lethal rage and the violence are very real.  Fox News didn’t invent them.  If Muslims are inclined to dismiss this as merely a problem of a negative image that’s been foisted upon them by ill-disposed outsiders, they’ll never come to grips with the reality that faces them (and the rest of us).
