A dramatic step toward schism in the Anglican communion

The “Anglican communion” includes a number of national churches — Henry VIII, of blessed memory, pioneered the idea of autonomous national churches for well-known reasons of his own — under the leadership, more or less, of the archbishop of Canterbury.  In recent years, as the numbers and vitality of the parent body in the United Kingdom have sharply declined, the vigor of the Anglican churches in Africa has increased, both relatively and absolutely.  And they are much more conservative or, as they would say, faithful to the teachings of Christ and the Bible.  Accordingly, they’re not happy with many recent developments in Anglican circles, and they’re especially unhappy right now with certain trends in the American branch of the communion, which is commonly called “Episcopalianism” or the “Episcopal Church.”
