Generally regarded as the greatest English poet of the eighteenth century, Alexander Pope is most widely known for his satirical verse and his translations of Homer. Next to Shakespeare, he’s the most frequently appearing writer in the “Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.”

Teach me to feel another’s woe,

to hide the fault I see.

That mercy I to others show,

that mercy show to me.

Alexander Pope (1688-1744)
