A view from Haleakala
One of the most literally awesome places that I know is the summit of Haleakala, on the island of Maui. It’s almost always wreathed in clouds and, as you climb it, you despair of ever getting through their thick, wet fog. But then, suddenly, you do. The air is breathtakingly clear, the world is far below you, and you can see, roughly a hundred miles away, the peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island.  (Wikimedia Commons)
