The main gate of the ancient city of Lachish, which, in its heyday, was second in importance only to Jerusalem itself. A letter recovered from the ruins here (and dated to circa BC 590) warns of the impending Babylonian destruction: “Let my lord know that we are watching over the beacon of Lachish, according to the signals which my lord gave, for Azekah is not seen.” According to Jeremiah 34:7, Lachish and Azekah were the last two Judean cities holding out before the conquest of Jerusalem and the “Babylonian captivity.”
