I only caught a few minutes of the Republican debate tonight.  But it was enough time for me to see Donald Trump make a coarse comment that, before the past several months — that is, before The Donald became an active candidate for the presidency of the United States — would have been utterly unthinkable in a presidential debate:

So far as I can tell, the audience thought it was hilarious.

I’m beginning to wonder whether I’ve become a stranger in a strange land.

Years ago, one of the things that many Americans held against Bill Clinton was the fact that, thanks to him, they found themselves needing to explain to their children what oral sex was.  The nightly news became embarrassingly sordid and tawdry.

Now, Mr. Donald Trump has brought those same wonderful qualities into presidential debates.  He vows, as well, to make Mr. Clinton’s various sexual scandals and infidelities an issue.  But how can he, of all people, do such a thing?  Does he perhaps trust that his own shameless boastfulness will give him an advantage over Mr. Clinton’s relative stealth in these matters?

Is this really what the Republic has come to?
