This is the site, in today’s Czech Republic, of the village of Lidice. The town first appears in historical records from the early fourteenth century. In 1942, however, in retaliation for the assassination of Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich, Lidice was utterly obliterated — with its men, its women, and its children — by order of the Führer, Adolf Hitler, and SS commander Heinrich Himmler.
