Sadiq Khan, the son of a seamstress and a bus driver who had emigrated to the United Kingdom from Pakistan, has been elected mayor of London.
Should Mr. Donald Trump succeed in his plan to become Generalissimo of the United States, he will seek to bar folks like Mr. Khan from entering our fair land. (As you may have noticed, he enthusiastically endorses the immigration of Polish workers — and, for that matter, of young female models from eastern Europe (such as this one and this one) — but he opposes the entry of Muslims into America.)
I myself would be more inclined to block Sadiq Khan because he represents the Labour Party than because he’s a Muslim. But then, I don’t actually favor border blockades in either case.
Clearly, though, I’m out of sync with a large number of Republican primary voters. It may, thus, be time for me to find another party.
I’m thinking about the Libertarian Party. But that may be a bridge too far. I’ll keep looking.
I like Speaker Paul Ryan’s explanation, the other day, that a standard bearer must, umm, bear our standards. That seems pretty obvious. I’ve been a Republican because the Republican Party came closest to advocating my beliefs. I won’t support its nominee merely because it’s historically been “my team.” When it no longer advocates my principles, I leave.
