There’s a genuine battle on.  For the first time in American history — certainly for the first time in my life — there’s a substantial and vocal proportion of the citizenry who see no particular value in religious liberty, which is one of the bedrock values on which this nation was built and which was one of the principal factors (e.g., William Penn, Roger Williams, the Catholic settlement of Maryland, and the Puritans) behind the colonization of America in the first place.

The catalyst for this change, which has occurred with startling rapidity, appears to be an absolutizing of the value of free and unjudged sexual activity, which, where they conflict with the new Prime Directive, results in its being given precedence over other, more traditional, rights such as the freedom of religious expression.
