LDS Charities

Red Cross volunteers
These volunteers for the American Red Cross appear to be wearing vests identifying them as such — something that, I’ve read on the internet, only bogus, self-promoting corporations such as the LDS “Church” do.  (Wikimedia Commons public domain)

Inevitably, critics of everything Mormon are attacking the Church’s Mormon Helping Hands projects.

“Too self-promoting,” they say.  “All those icky yellow shirts,” they cry.

Well, here’s an interesting website on some of the Church’s humanitarian undertakings:

“I’ll have nothing to do with such things,” vows one critic.

And, since he’s inactive and hostile to the Church, he presumably won’t.

Now perhaps he’s doing even better things on his own, or through some other charity.  If so, that’s wonderful.

But the odds are against it.  Secular and religiously unaffiliated people, while some of them spend a great deal of time and effort on criticizing religious people, give, on average, much less time, effort, and money to charity than religious people do.  That’s been demonstrated multiple times in multiple studies.

I hope he is, though.  I hope he’s not just cynically sniping at those who’re actually doing things while he’s doing little or nothing.

In the meanwhile, active Latter-day Saints out there should take considerable gratification in the tangible good that their church and their fellow Latter-day Saints are doing.  Have a look at the website above.  And, if you feel inspired to do so, contribute.
