My favorite line from the classic 1951 science fiction film “The Thing from Another World” comes when the scientists realize that the composite parts of the “monster,” which is played by James Arness, aren’t animal but plant cells. “What we have here,” one of them says, “is an intellectual carrot.” I’ve known several intellectual carrots in my time, but I’ve never had to fight one in the Antarctic.
