I first became aware of Henry Adams (the very literary son of Charles Francis Adams, grandson of John Quincy Adams, and great-grandson of John Adams and Abigail Adams) when, as a young teenager, I somehow came across his 1913 book “Mont-Saint-Michele and Chartres,” from which this plate comes.  (Wikimedia Commons public domain)
