An interesting short piece from Stephen Smoot:

Like him, I cannot imagine that same-sex marriages for all eternity will ever be solemnized in Latter-day Saint temples, or that same-sex marriages will be regarded as equivalent or equal, theologically speaking, to unions of men and women.

Whether you’re happy or sad or angry at the fact, “heteronormativity” is so thoroughly and essentially baked into the Mormon theological cake that removing it would create something quite distinct from Mormonism as it has been understood since literally before 1830.

The introduction and cessation of plural marriage represented a paradigm shift.  So too, in a theologically much smaller way, did the (temporary?) end of the Gathering and the opening of the priesthood to blacks of African descent.  The ordination of women would also involve some significant rethinking.  But these changes would be absolutely dwarfed by the rewriting of the plan of salvation that would be entailed by ascribing eternal significance to same-sex unions.  Mormon doctrine, Mormon cosmology, would be fundamentally — and, I think, in some ways unrecognizably — transformed.

I wouldn’t hold my breath.

As I say, you can be happy about this or not.  But that won’t change the reality of things.
