A native of England, James Edward Talmage was educated at, among others, Lehigh University, Johns Hopkins University, and received his doctorate from Illinois Wesleyan University. I’ve been told, but haven’t independently confirmed, that he was the first Latter-day Saint to receive a Ph.D. — a degree that was still something of a novelty in the English-speaking world. A native of Norway, John Andreas Widtsoe earned a bachelor’s degree here in the Boston area, at Harvard, and received his Ph.D. at the University of Göttingen, in Germany.
