Character Counts

Character Counts

Shifting Evangelical attitudes
I don’t know the source for this stunning graph, which was shared on Facebook yesterday.

Many Southern Evangelicals and ostensible political conservatives should consider this New Testament passage:  “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)

Some Latter-day Saints probably should, as well.

They should also consider the story of Esau’s sale of his birthright in exchange for a bowl of lentil stew — giving up his inheritance for immediate gratification of his hunger — as it’s told in Genesis 25.

Conservatives used to argue that character mattered.  Real conservatives still do.

A fifth accuser against Roy Moore has now come forward:

“Woman accuses Moore of sexually assaulting her at 16”

***

I confess that, while I don’t think people should be pronounced guilty simply because they’ve been accused of wrongdoing, these accusations do seem pretty credible — even if Gloria Allred is connected with the latest one.

Is the timing suspicious?  Well, I’m sure that it’s not coincidental.  Roy Moore was once merely a regional buffoon — I freely admit that I’m not a fan — but now he’s stepped out onto the national stage.  And it’s true that the national media dislike Trump and Trumpism.  But the accusations remain, in my judgment and that of others, entirely plausible.  Indeed, more than plausible.

“Roy Moore Responds to Allegations”

“What it’s like to watch men like Roy Moore as a conservative and as a sex abuse survivor”

“No, Roy Moore Is Not Entitled to Due Process Before We Believe the Claims Against Him”

“Conservatives Should Disavow, Not Embrace, Roy Moore”

“Less is Moore”

There’s just a tad of rough language in this one:

“If You Refuse to Condemn Predators because of Politics, You’re Disgusting”

Breitbart: Hey, Let’s Litigate Age of Consent”

“Saving Roy Moore Isn’t Worth It”

One and a half or perhaps even two cheers:

“Are Mormons the new conscience of the GOP?”

“One Blasphemer’s New Admiration for Mormons”

***

“Roy Moore almost certainly isn’t going to be a senator”
