“Aida” and Mitt Romney

“Aida” and Mitt Romney January 3, 2018

The new Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy.
I’ve taken this beautiful photograph from the Hale Centre Theatre’s website. Since I’m very enthusiastically praising them and their new theater, I hope that they won’t mind my borrowing.

My wife and I went out to dinner last night at one of our favorite restaurants, the Market Street Grill in South Jordan.  Then, for the first time, we attended a performance on the center stage at the new Hale Centre Theatre, not too far away.

We had already seen a performance of Forever Plaid, some time ago, on the Theatre’s smaller but still rather large secondary stage.  (See “The New Hale Centre Theatre, in Sandy, Utah.”)  Before the performance that evening, an executive of the Theatre kindly took us for a private look at the center stage, which was still being completed.  We were awed by the overall look of the new building, and both the smaller stage and the nearly-complete center stage were very impressive.

But nothing fully prepared us for what we saw tonight — a spectacular performance of Elton John’s and Tim Rice’s Aida in a breathtaking new theatrical space.  (For a minute-long glimpse of some of the highlights of the production, see here.)

The Wasatch Front and Utah have received a magnificent gift, an astounding treasure, in this new theater complex.  I’m not sure that there’s currently a theater in the world that can compete with it.  For just a hint of how impressive it is, watch this three-minute video.

On a very different note:

I’m not a Hatch-hater, but I’m not unhappy about his announced retirement.

“Trump begged Orrin Hatch to run again. The senator retired anyway.”

“Orrin Hatch retirement announcement sparks reaction from lawmakers, politicians”

“Romney could become Trump’s new Washington foe”

“Sources: Romney Planning a Senate Bid”

“Senator Mitt Romney Will Disappoint All the Right People”

I hereby announce that I will not be seeking Senator Hatch’s seat in the Senate of the United States.  Nor will I be supporting Judge Roy Moore of Alabama, should he throw his hat into the ring.

Instead, I heartily and enthusiastically encourage Governor Mitt Romney to run, and, if he does, I will support him enthusiastically and heartily.

On a related note, I beg — I implore — Steve Bannon to come to Utah to campaign against Governor Romney.  (For what it’s worth, I also hope that he will come in his recently preferred guise as an unshaven homeless man.)

“Bannon rails against Romney in Alabama speech: ‘You hid behind your religion’ to avoid Vietnam”

“Steve Bannon Attacks Mitt Romney for Missionary Service: ‘You Hid Behind Your Religion'”

I like this gem, published well before Senator Hatch decided against going for a record eighth term:

“The Shadow President?”

Will Mitt Romney run?  Almost certainly.  If he does, will he win?  That’s even more likely.

I would rather have had Mitt Romney as president — a decent, highly intelligent, and honorable man of character — but I’m pleased with the way things seem to be going at the moment.
