“We’re prophets to the whole world”

“We’re prophets to the whole world” October 31, 2018

The Church's newest temple -- for a few weeks, at least.
The newly-dedicated Concepción Chile Temple     (LDS Media Library)

The headline is slightly misleading, since only President Russell M. Nelson and Elder Gary E. Stevenson are actually interviewed in this particular video clip:

“Latter-day Saint Prophet, Wife and Apostle Share Insights of Global Ministry: President Nelson says process of Church restoration continuing”

It’s an interesting conversation, though.  I especially enjoyed the last portion of it.

“We’re prophets to the whole word,” says President Nelson.  I can’t recall a president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in my lifetime who has been more open about what it’s like to preside over the Church, receiving revelation, and more candid about publicly claiming prophethood.  I’m enjoying it enormously.

You might also find this interview — which, at times, mentions a couple of  sensitive  subjects — rather interesting:

The temple in Concepción, Chile, having just been dedicated, another South American temple now nears its dedication date:

A thoughtful and important speech from President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

For your ever-growing “Religion Poisons Everything” file or, alternatively, for your “The Mormon Cult is Evil and Never Helps Anybody, Especially Non-Mormons” collection, here’s a helpful 1:30-minute video from a non-Latter-day Saint news source located in the Florida Panhandle:

But is it true?  Here is a really interesting short article about a presentation given by Professor Anthony Sweat — with whom I shared the program down in Ephraim last Saturday — back on 24 October 2015, during the annual Sidney B. Sperry Symposium at Brigham Young University:

“Hefted and Handled: Speaker Shares Tangible Interactions with Book of Mormon Objects”

This is part of the story that we’re trying to tell in the film that we’re creating about the many witnesses — both official and unofficial — to the material objects associated with the recovery of the Book of Mormon in the late 1820s.  I’m very, very excited about the project.

An interesting attempt to apply evolutionary psychology to the history and anthropology of religion:

“Why Are Some Religions More Popular Than Others?”

I’m not sure that I would count such speculations as fully scientific, but they’re thought-provoking, in their way.
