Some of the more bizarre conspiracy theorists among my obsessive enemies are absolutely certain that I wasn’t really on research leave last year. I was, they insist, on probation. Being punished for my crimes against reason and ethics. Some are even sure that I’ve been fired from Brigham Young University. A few are predicting that I’ll soon be excommunicated.

Meanwhile, my wife sent me a photo about five minutes ago . . . from Maui, where she and her sister are enjoying a visit. Her sending of that photo, which is shown below, brings to mind the philosophical problem of evil. Why is there so much suffering and injustice in the world? Or, to put it another way: Why am I not in Maui?
