"Death to America!"
In Nishapur, Iran, a group of inquirers pose the question “Death to America!” as part of a diligent effort to deepen their understanding of United States foreign policy.

I’m struck by some aspects of the article:

Saturday’s news “saddened” Ordain Women Executive Board Chairwoman Debra Jenson.

“We are profoundly troubled by a definition of apostasy that seems to include members asking sincere questions of our leaders,” Jenson said in the group’s news release.

Compare Ms. Jenson’s suggestion that Ms. Kelly was excommunicated for “asking sincere questions” of Church leaders to her reference to those — seemingly the same group — who “publicly support ordination for women.”

The latter suggests that the punctuation shouldn’t be “Ordain Women?” but, instead, “Ordain Women!”

“Once the church changes to be a more inclusive place and once women are ordained,” Kelly said then, “that’s a place I’d feel welcome.”

Again, I must be missing the question.  Taking “a stand” in a “struggle for gender justice” seems at least slightly different than requesting a clarification, or seeking more information.  Maybe I need to refine my skills with the English language.  (Ms. Kelley herself might well say so.)

And Ms. Kelly’s announcement that her husband, Neil Ransom, will be resigning his membership in the Church is also difficult (for me, at least) to construe as a question.
