Almost immediately after I posted my previous item on “The vile despot Brigham Young,” I thought of another book that I should have included, one that would give a better idea of Brigham the (good) man:

And then a reader calling himself Bernardo Gui recommended it, saying of the letters included in the book that “They reveal the inner man, and I came away with greater respect and love for Brother Brigham. For example, he once sent money to a son who was on a mission in the eastern states to repay an old debt to a man he had had business with before the Saints moved west. He included the interest calculated over the years he had owed the money. That is integrity.”
So I’m calling attention to the book here. (See above!)
Janice Leilani Smith recommended John A. Widtsoe, compiler, The Discourses of Brigham Young (which show him to have been, among other things, very funny) and Susan Dutkus Blackburn suggested Brigham Young at Home, by his daughter Clarissa Young Spencer and Mabel Harmer.
