Ruby's, on Balboa Pier
The original Ruby’s Diner is this one, on the Balboa pier. But that’s not the Ruby’s that I typically went to as a child. Mine was the one further down the coast, right beside the Pacific Coast Highway, overlooking the sea.

Things are a bit out of joint here in California.

A few days ago, for example, when we dropped by Ruby’s Diner along the Pacific Coast Highway just below Newport Beach in order for me to get a date milkshake — I’ve been getting date milkshakes there for as long as I can remember — they were out of dates!

That’s what Californian’s get, I think, for putting Jerry Brown back into the governor’s office.

But I was relieved to see, despite all the bad news about California’s epic drought, that the Pacific Ocean is still high enough to reach the beaches and the piers.

And just a few minutes ago, my wife and I went with friends to Slater ‘s 50/50 for hamburgers.  Fantastic.  I had the B’B’B’ Bacon Burger.  One of the best burgers I’ve ever tasted.

Slater’s specializes, among other things, in burger patties that are 50% beef and 50% ground bacon.

I have to warn you, though, that there is no cardiologist on the premises, and that, thus far, no rabbi has been located who’s been willing to pronounce the 50/50 meat patties kosher.
