Some further reactions to Iowa’s caucus results:
* The odds are now very good that the Republican nominee will be a Cuban-American. That’s really interesting.
* I would be happy with either Senator Cruz or Senator Rubio. (I was aware of both, and supported both, when they were first running for the Senate.)
* I tend to lean toward Senator Rubio, I think, because I believe he’s more electable at this point. Senator Cruz has a reputation as a bomb-thrower. It may not actually be fully justified, but it will certainly be used against him. My other specific reservation has to do with some of his positions on intelligence-gathering and homeland security. As Justice Robert H. Jackson of the United States Supreme Court observed in his dissenting opinion in Terminiello v. Chicago (1949), the Constitution isn’t a “suicide pact.”
* I do have one general reservation about both Senator Cruz and Senator Rubio. It’s one of the many reservations that I had regarding Senator Obama: We have no idea what they might be like as executives.
* I’m a bit sad that Carly Fiorina isn’t doing better.
* It was good to see Mike Huckabee “suspend” his campaign.
* When will Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Rick Santorum, Manny, Moe, Curly Joe, and that guy who calls himself Jim Gilmore take a look at reality and exit the Republican race?
* Fifty percent of Iowa Democrats voted for an avowed socialist. The mask long worn by the Democrats’ left wing is finally slipping. This is a step forward in the nation’s political life.
* For Mrs. Clinton’s vice presidential pick, I suggest either David Petraeus or Edward Snowden. Then she’ll truly be able to promise “the most transparent administration in American history.”
