Agreeing with me on Book of Mormon geography isn’t necessary for your salvation — although, of course, as a general principle it’s never wise or prudent to disagree with my opinions on any subject — but I lean strongly toward an ancient Mesoamerican setting for the story of the Nephites, Lamanites, Mulekites, and Jaredites.
And, so, the account given in the book of Mosiah — with people passing by one another, hiding in the wilderness, getting lost, becoming unable to find their way back to their mother settlement, and so forth — makes total sense to me in view of articles such as this one.
I myself have had the experience of having no clue where I was as we walked through remote jungles in lowland Guatemala — fortunately, we had local native guides with us, as well as archaeologists who knew the area well — and even of passing within a few feet of the ruins of ancient Maya temples without seeing them at all.
