I know that I sound like a broken record: I’ve said this many times. But the Hale theaters are a Wasatch Front treasure.
With a friend tonight, my wife and I enjoyed dinner at the Market Street Grill in South Jordan and then attended a first-rate performance of the musical Big River — based on Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn — at the Hale Centre Theatre in West Jordan.
Here’s a recording of “Worlds Apart,” one of the pieces in the musical, which is sung by Jim and Huck:
The play was, by turns, very funny and quite moving. It’s reminded me yet again of how very good a writer Mark Twain was, and it put me in the mood for sharing a few lesser known quotations from him. Here are three:
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”
“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear — not absence of fear.”
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
