
I believe that I may have told the story of being given a tour of Sacramento quite a few years ago (I hadn’t been there in a long time) by someone who had hosted me the night before for a lecture to the Sacramento chapter of the BYU Alumni Association. “Over on the right is Sutter’s Fort,” he would say. “And that’s x, and that’s y.” As we approached the capitol building, without the slightest variation in tone, he said, “And coming up on the left is the headquarters of the state’s largest criminal syndicate.”
