Nobody who’s paid much attention to this blog for any length of time will mistake me for an enthusiastic fan of Donald J. Trump. I am, as I’ve been at pains to point out, a serious political conservative with libertarian leanings, and he’s . . . well, let’s leave it at that.
But I also don’t suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome.
For instance, I really like his Supreme Court appointment, Judge Gorsuch. And Mr. Trump has recruited, or allowed his handlers to recruit, some good people, who seem to be doing some good things.
I particularly like the speechwriter for his recent remarks in Warsaw, as does my friend and colleague Ralph Hancock:
While I don’t ignore its flaws and its dark patches, and while I’m an enthusiastic student and expounder of a major non-Western tradition, I’m also convinced that, on balance, Western civilization has been a very, very good thing for humanity.
