Progress or regress?

Progress or regress? September 3, 2007

Prior to World War II, we were absorbed with making a living. Everything centered around survival. Since that point we have not only developed the technology to make our work easier but also allowed for boundless sensation. Instead of being possessed with survival, we are now possessed with pleasure — even in our work.

It is painfully obvious that the decline in fervent faith during this same period has led to a decline in decent behavior. Our pleasure hunt has shut the door on upright behavior to the detriment of our society.

In this day of cellular telephones, computers, satellite television on demand and virtual reality invention, we should be awed. These technological gadgets speak highly of our innovative country and have made our work more productive. But, all of this progress and technology really are nothing without a firm grasp of the transcendent, of the eternal nature of our souls.

Consider the Psalmist’s words:
Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases; for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him. Though while he lived he counted himself blessed– and men praise you when you prosper– he will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the light of life. A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.

Do you take pride in cultures riches? Our progress? Our technology? So what…. In the end, its not what you own. It’s not what you do for a living. It’s not your education or your community status. It’s not who you are. Who you are depends on Who you know.

“When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus”
— Acts 4:13

Who I know trumps what I know.

You see, the Almighty takes the base things, the simpleton and the fool and transforms all of it for eternity. Technology will end. The computers of this world will be unplugged.

Then what will we have?

Col 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
