From the Los Angeles Times:  Members of the Salvadoran community in Los Angeles realized a long-awaited dream Saturday when groundbreaking began on a plaza to honor Msgr. Oscar A. Romero, a Catholic archbishop who was slain in 1980 during El Salvador’s civil war. Romero, an outspoken advocate for the poor and a revered figure for many Central Americans, was shot while celebrating Mass by an assassin with suspected ties to right-wing government security forces. El Salvador’s bloody 12-year civil war... Read more

I spent most of last week in Denver for a conference, and flew home late yesterday afternoon. Approaching New York, our plane took a path up the Hudson, to circle around toward LaGuardia. As we began our descent, we swept over parts of New Jersey, and then turned toward Manhattan. Looking out my window, I could see the Statue of Liberty. I’d never seen it from the angle before: it was almost directly below our plane. When you see it... Read more

It’s not often that I find myself sandwiched between two archbishops, but I did Friday night, when I had the privilege of serving as deacon for a Mass concelebrated by Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez and Denver Archbishop Samuel Aquila. The occasion was the closing liturgy for the 2013 Catholic Media Conference in Denver. Archbishop Gomez was the keynote speaker for the Catholic Press awards and dinner that followed the Mass, and spoke eloquently and compellingly about an issue close... Read more

The statement, which may surprise some people, from Bill Donohue: There are plenty of reasons to be critical of President Obama’s policies as they relate to the Catholic Church, and I have not been shy in stating them. But the reaction on the part of conservatives, many of whom are Catholic, over his speech in Ireland, is simply insane. Never did Obama say he wants “an end to Catholic education.” Indeed, he never said anything critical about the nature of... Read more

Here’s one writer who thinks its importance is being overestimated—and we have Vatican II to thank (or blame). Details:  So, how important is the homily at Holy Mass? It depends on who you ask. If you pose the very same question to a Catholic who is fortunate enough to regularly assist at the Traditional Latin Mass, the answer you’ll likely receive is that it’s not very important at all. And guess what? Objectively speaking, it’s not. Now, that’s not to say... Read more

Details:  Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, made his first visit to a mosque in New York City and it was the Albanian Islamic Cultural Center in Tompkinsville where he met with Muslim and other faith leaders. The cardinal spent more than two hours touring the mosque and the Miraj Islamic School and having lunch with about 40 clergy and laity. “I thank God that this day has arrived,” the cardinal said. “I thank you for your welcome,... Read more

Details:  “I love you, Tara.” These were the first words Jim Evans uttered to his wife after being shot in the head by his son-in-law during a worship service Sunday at the St. James the Just Catholic Church. Tara Evans was one of more than 150 congregants who gathered at the church Thursday for a liturgy of reparation, offered by the Rev. Erik Richtsteig. The service was to cleanse the chapel from the unholy actions that had occurred earlier that... Read more
