3. Personality is largely inborn, along with energy levels.

Despite subtle shifts and mellowing, people will behave in senior centers pretty much the same way they did on the playground. As you age, you are still yourself, only moreso.

The child who loved to read in her room is, right this minute, writing this blog in her room.

This takes the pressure off self-improvement. Yes, I teach transformation, but even people who achieve enlightenment notice they’re still in the same world. (Chop wood, carry water.) And they are still themselves.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting more out of your life and yourself, as long as you don’t make wrong what already exists. Sure, lose the weight, get help for the addictions and be more patient with the kids, but stop thinking you don’t deserve anything good unless you make dramatic, permanent changes in who you are.

I spent way too much time hating myself, thinking it would lead to self-improvement.
