I loved this touching story my sister Desirée shared of how the Lord answered her prayer as she suffered with a kidney stone. I loved how an idea of what to pray for was given to her and that she followed that prompting. I truly believe that God is with us in our trials and answers our prayers when we act in faith.
Desirée Bushman Johnson’s story
Last Sunday I was just about to load the kids into the car and head to church when a horrible pain in the right side of my back started. I tried to call Kurt a couple of times but he wouldn’t answer. The pain continued to escalate and I realized if it got much worse I wouldn’t be able to drive anywhere. I loaded the kids up and headed a few blocks to the Instacare.
As I got there I started throwing up and the kids were really getting worried. Luckily the Instacare staff got me back quickly and the receptionists said they’d stay with my kids and try to get a hold of someone. Asher kept my phone. They finally got a hold of Kurt who was conducting sacrament meeting. He snuck away and met us at the Instacare. The primary president came for the kids and took them to primary. The pain started to subside and I was given something for the nausea and a shot for the pain. figured it was a kidney stone so I went home to try and wait it out. I couldn’t even make it home before I was throwing up again. The car ride was always the worst.
I thought I’d passed the kidney stone that night because I didn’t feel much pain at all on Monday except for a constant pain in my right back. But that evening at a Self Reliance class, the pain started up again and it was pretty yucky through the night. Tuesday Kurt took me to the ER. They got me drugged up quickly and I was feeling very drowsy. A CAT scan showed I had one kidney stone and as a side note one cyst in my ovaries. They gave me some prescriptions and sent me home to wait it out. The pain meds worked great but really wiped me out. I slept on Tuesday and lots of Wednesday.
Around 3 a.m. Thursday morning, I woke up with super intense pain.
I took some pain killer but they didn’t do anything to relieve my pain. I started praying that God would take away the pain, but then I changed my prayer and asked if he would just guide it down with his finger. I really felt like He was there.
I apologized for pacing around the bathroom and not being still and again told Him how painful it was. I could feel Him say “I have to push it slowly or it will hurt you more.” So I accepted that and tried to breathe through the pain.
At 4:30 am, I heard Piper cry out. I went to her and helped her go potty and get back to bed. As I walked back to my room I knew the stone was in my bladder and I’d see it when I woke up in the morning. I crashed. Thursday morning I found my stone with a bunch of blood.
I know God was with me during my pain and I just thought it was a really neat experience. Thanks to so many for food, watching my girls, and praying for me. Kurt was a rock star helping so much with the kids and allowing me to rest. I hope to never pass another one.
