Like many Americans, I grew up eating Kellogg’s cereals. Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops, Raisin Bran, and Special K were regular parts of breakfast in my home. When our sons were children, they became as familiar with them as I was. Their children, however, are growing up in a very different world. Kellogg’s recently made this announcement: “Kellogg Company’s Latest Collaboration with GLAAD Unwraps Why ‘Boxes Are for Cereal, Not for People.’” Their statement includes the assertion: “No matter... Read more

Benjamin Netanyahu has been prime minister of Israel since 2009. He previously served three terms as prime minister in the 1990s. Now it appears that his time in office may be over. In what is being called “a seismic event in Israeli politics,” Mr. Netanyahu’s rivals announced yesterday the creation of a coalition government that would replace him. Yair Lapid, who leads the centrist Yesh Atid party, and Naftali Bennett, who heads the right-wing Yamina party, will team up with... Read more

Mother Violet Fletcher was seven years old when the Tulsa Race Massacre began. At a recent event, she described what happened to her. “I still remember all the shooting and running,” she said. “People being killed. Crawling and seeing smoke. Seeing airplanes flying and a messenger going through the neighborhood telling all the Black people to leave town.” Then she stopped speaking. Even after one hundred years, the memories of that horrible day can still overwhelm her. As another sign... Read more

On May 30, 1921, a young Black man entered an elevator in downtown Tulsa. At one point he was alone with its white female operator. It’s unclear what happened next, but the operator screamed and the man fled the scene. He was arrested the next day. Rumors spread through Tulsa’s white community. A story published in the Tulsa Tribune on May 31 claimed that the man had attempted to rape the woman. An angry white mob gathered in front of... Read more

B. J. Thomas died Saturday of complications from lung cancer. He became famous with country and pop crossover hits in the 1960s and 1970s, including “Hooked on a Feeling” and “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.” However, he fell into a spiral of substance abuse that nearly ended his marriage. On January 28, 1976, he gave his life to Jesus, less than a month after his wife came to faith. He and his wife reconciled, and he was sober to... Read more

Since 1949, May has been Mental Health Month in the US. In recognition of this vital emphasis, actor Ryan Reynolds wrote on Instagram this week about “my lifelong pal, anxiety.” He added, “I know I’m not alone” and stated, “We don’t talk enough about mental health and don’t do enough to destigmatize talking about it.” In related news, three-time Grand Slam tennis champion Naomi Osaka has announced that she will not speak with reporters during the upcoming French Open. She... Read more

The Lego Group has been making LEGOs since 1949. I played with their building blocks, as did our sons. Now our grandchildren are continuing the tradition. Heretofore, LEGOs were known for two characteristics: they can be used to build nearly anything, and they are very painful to step on barefooted (I can attest to both facts). Now we can add a third: LEGOs are promoting LGBTQ activism. The company’s tweet reads: “We’re super excited to reveal our new set—LEGO Everyone... Read more

On this day in 1977, the world changed forever. That was the day when we first saw on movie screens the words, “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away . . .” Then came the iconic logo for “STAR WARS” and John Williams’ unforgettable orchestral music I can hear in my mind as I type these words. The movie received seven Oscars and grossed close to $800 million worldwide. It made Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Darth... Read more

NOTE: Phil Mickelson shocked the sports world with his victory yesterday. For my biblical response, please read my latest website article here. Gunfire erupted at a house party packed with hundreds of guests late Saturday night in New Jersey. Two people were killed; at least twelve more were wounded.  Yesterday, a cable car taking visitors to a mountaintop view in northern Italy plummeted to the ground, killing at least fourteen people. And twenty-one people running a mountain ultramarathon in northwestern... Read more
