I just read the article “Unfinshed Agenda” in India Today and saw these stats. They are an eye-opener! I thought these need to be brought in front of everyone to put things in perspective! To change all this is a gargantuan task.. and it requires consensus which is sadly missing!!
– Of the 126 airports (domestic and international) only 9 are profitable and 45 airports where NO flights land!
– 18 of the 30 State Electrivity Boards lose money.
– SEBs lose Rs 30,000 crores in THEFT annually (roughly USD 6.8 BILLION)
– Peak Power Shortage = 11,500 MW
– 22 Signatures are required for Exports
– It takes 11 steps and 71 days to set up a business.
– Licensing and permit requirements take 20 steps and 270 days.
– It takes 67 days to register a property
– It takes 40 steps to enforce a contract
– Labor reforms which affect barely 7% of the labor population cannot move forward.
– Internal Debt is OVER 80% of the GDP
– Deficits of State and Center add up to OVER 10% of the GDP.
– Tax-GDP ratio is just over 11%.
– 40% of the food produced ROTS (around 16 MILLION TONNES of foodgrain and 40 MILLION TONNES of fruits and vegetables)
– If food processing was opened up to enable refrigeration, processing and packaging – it would create jobs, deliver incomes to 670 million farmers (who are 66% of population living off of LESS THAN 25% of GDP)
– 97 percent of retail is unorganized
– 45% of exports originate in North – with poor roads and connectivity, average travel time for consignments is 15 days
