Would you move to Corporate India for Career?

With outsourcing well entrenched and going strong.. both, when the markets are good .. and when they are BAD… this is an interesting question that Marianne asks: Would you Move to India to Move up the Career Ladder?

So, if relocating from Cincinnati to Dallas 10 years ago could’ve enhanced your IT career, do you think moving from Bangor, Maine to a stint in Bangalore, India could provide a similar professional boost?

Would you transfer from New York to New Delhi to manage a company’s new team of programmers?

The comments following the post are interesting.. in that most are willing if compensated properly. What is a question of “choice” right now.. may well become a question of “necessity” in the coming years – say 8-10 years from now! Why? Because the centers in India are doing cutting edge stuff as a friend just confirmed with me yesterday.. and as is evident from the launch of Google Finance (a part time project in Bangalore office).

With the “apprenticeship layer” of the IT world slowly vanishing from the US and other advanced countries – it may well be hard for the people to do without doing a stint in corporate India!!

Another question that should be asked simultaneously is – would education in the US be remunerative then? A kid from New Delhi studies in the IIT or say at the local engineering college and comes out with almost no loan, while his counterpart in the US comes out with a loan of 30,000 USD. As a business entity the kid from US has greater potential of going bankrupt since he needs to earn over a certain threshhold to make his payments as opposed to the Indian kid! So, unless your “investments in career” have been low compared to other peers you might lose out on flexibility in the career market of tomorrow – potentially a deadly sin!

So, when you ask the question – Would you work in Corporate India for Career – you should also ask “Would you study in Indian schools?
